A shutout pitching performance by starter Matt Glady and reliever Patrick Sullivan and hits from up and down the lineup powered the Severna Park baseball team to a 10-0 defeat of North Point in the Class 4A East region title and vaulted the Falcons into the state tournament for the second time since 2015.
In a contest that was mostly completed on Friday night at Joe Cannon Stadium before thunderstorms postponed the finish to Saturday at Glen Burnie High School, the Falcons looked sharp throughout. RBIs/hits/walks/runs scored by Ryan Key, Drew Jeffries, Scott Huntley, George Lesher, Ben Hollingsworth, Cameron Clark, Sam Barranco, Jake Hallett and Kody Milton allowed Severna Park to jump out to a 9-0 lead through four innings.
Play was suspended in the top of the fifth inning, and Severna Park had to play for less than 15 minutes to plate a run on Saturday and finish the job by mercy-rule with a 10-0 win.
The region title is the second in three years for the Falcons. Severna Park fell to Leonardtown in last year’s 4A East final, a year after winning the region and making it all the way to the state title game in 2015. This is the seventh state tournament appearance all-time for the program, which won state championships in 2003, 2005 and 2009.
The Falcons, now 22-2 overall, play North champion Howard in the Class 4A state semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Shirley Povich field in Bethesda.
Drew Jeffries' RBI-single against North Point gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Severna Park went on to win, 10-0, earn a berth in the state tournament and improve to 22-2 overall:
